  • How do I order Silo?
Due to popular demand, we have started a registry for pre-order. This registration is separate from our newsletter and designed solely for reserving a spot on our waitlist. We are committed to delivering to our Kickstarter backers first. This waitlist is for Silo's future customers. No payment information will be collected and there is no commitment on your end, but registering will give you early priority access to our first market batches.
  • Do I need to own an Alexa to use Silo?
Nope! Alexa is fully built in and can act as your kitchen’s Alexa device. And we don’t just mean Alexa-enabled: Silo is part of a new class of devices who have the privilege to have worked with the Amazon team to actually incorporate the Alexa technology into the product.
  • Why not glass Silo containers?
As an environmentally conscious company, we explored different possible materials for our containers. Using glass for our uniquely shaped container was deemed impossible: 1. Glass could not hold the deep vacuum and could possibly collapse under pressure. 2. Our unique technique for vacuuming containers for the bottom cannot be manufactured accurately enough out of glass.
  • Are Silo container BPA-free?
We choose to use reusable and stable BPA-free Tritan plastic which is one of the safest in the market as well as very durable and stain free. Tritan is the gold standard for quality and our goal is that the containers will serve you for a long time.
  • Which voltages will you support?
The Silo device will support local power voltage requirement. For each country that will be on our approved list (TBD), we will supply a device that works on either 220V or 110V as well as a relevant power plug.
  • I already have an Alexa in my kitchen. What do I do?
There’s no need to have multiple Alexas in the Kitchen - the Silo built-in Alexa can do everything your other Alexa can. This doesn’t mean you have to get rid of your other Alexa - simply place it in another room. The nearest device will hear and answer you, wherever you are in the home, thanks to Amazon’s “Device Arbitration” feature!
  • Where do I store my Silo containers after vacuuming?
Food stored in a silo container should be treated the same as it was any other container. Meaning you can safely store them in your pantry, fridge or freezer. The rule of thumb is to keep the vacuum stored food in the same condition that you will keep without vacuum.
  • What food should I store in vacuum?
Almost any kind of food can be stored in vacuum and food shelf life will be extended. The exceptions are the edible green plants of the cabbage family, such as broccoli. Please read at the bottom of our shelf life chart what you should not store in vacuum.
  • How can I reach Silo support team?
We are happy to answer any questions at [email protected] but we recommend looking for the answer here first, as most likely it can be found in this Q&A. You can also always reach us on our Facebook page.
  • What languages are supported by Silo?
The first language supported by Silo is English as do all the Alexa Skill currently supports (Note: Alexa itself currently supports multiple languages, such as German, French and Japanese. Support for Italian and Spanish is also coming soon to Alexa. The Silo Skills, such as tagging and inventory, will support these languages as well in the future.)
  • What does deep vacuum mean?
Deep vacuum storage refers to the storage of food items in a low-pressure environment. Reduced levels of oxygen slow the growth of bacteria and prevent oxidation of food, keeping it fresh for longer.
  • What materials does Silo contain?
Silo containers are made out of Eastman Tritan, considered to be “The glass of plastic”. It’s BPA-free, extremely durable, and food safe.
  • Can I microwave the containers?
Yes. The containers are BPA-free and microwavable. The lid is also microwave safe; however we recommend to remove it before microwaving. The containers are perfect for microwaving food as the bottom silicon seal also protects surfaces from the heated container, and the top edges don't get hot enough and allow easy holding.
  • Can I put Silo containers in a stove or toaster oven?
No. Due to the oven’s high temperature, plastics cannot be placed in it.
  • Can I use my other containers with the device?
No. The device is designed to support original Silo containers only. Other containers are not designed to be vacuum sealed.
  • How long does the vacuum seal last?
Once you vacuum the container it should stay sealed for at least 2 weeks.
  • Can I get the device without the Alexa in it?
All Silo devices do come with Alexa built-in. However, you can easily disable your Alexa in your device. But we do recommend keeping it active to maximize Silo's full functionality.
  • How big is Silo?
The silo base itself occupies a footprint of 9.8 inches by 10.4 inches while lying flat, and its foldable design allows it to flip up to take up even less space. Silo containers come in many sizes.
  • What is unique about your vacuum technology? How did you create the Silo one-touch experience?
Our patented vacuum technique is what allows the one-touch Silo experience. When we started the process, we want to make a simple system for vacuum sealing food in containers. In order to get there we want to place a container on a device and let it do the work, but early on we saw that you cannot suck air from the bottom of containers as fluids and fine grains will cause damage to vacuum pumps. Our patented solution includes a special airway at the side of containers which allows for an airflow to be drawn out from the top of the containers, so everything can be easily stored and vacuumed in our Silo containers without any clogging.
  • What will happen when Silo updates to include more languages?
When we update our software to include other languages for Silo specific skills, ALL of the previous generations will also update. This is a MUST for us. You will not have to buy the newest Silo to include this function.
  • How does Silo work with liquids and soups?
Liquids remain at the bottom of the container (see our video), and the design of the containers’ airflow prevents anything from escaping or leaking during the vacuum process.
  • Will Silo be accessible via Google Home?
Right now the device is accessible via Alexa only, as it's built-in. We are exploring accessing inventory via Google actions - but cannot definitively confirm this option to be seamless yet. So stay tuned!
  • How do I clean Silo?
The top surface on the base is glass that can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. The containers can be washed in the dishwasher or by hand.
  • Should I be worried about food particles or dirt getting stuck in the airway?
No, we have tested hundreds of different food items and had no issues with dirt accumulating in the air-path. It is impossible for large food particles to enter there during the vacuuming process and the air-path cleans very well in the dishwasher or even under regular water flow. This is one of the key things we have tested with our Beta community.
  • What about other container types? Especially for liquids or meal prep containers?
We do have a few more products in the pipeline, but we are committed first to the current offering.
  • How long do containers last?
We aim for a few good years of daily usage with Silo containers - it's impossible to test as it's still early. The container material is the best on the market and ours is even more rigid to support the vacuum.
  • Are Silo containers Freezer friendly?
Silo's containers are 100% freezer friendly. However, Silo is best for day-to-day use and we would recommend it more for the refrigerator and dry storage.
  • Are the containers stackable/nestable?
Silo containers are stackable/nestable for small to big containers. Same sized containers cannot be stacked due to the airway on the side. (We really want to make them nest but it is engineeringly impossible.)
  • What is Silo’s price & market release date?
We still haven't finalized the pricing of Silo for the general market, nor have we finalized our general market release date. It's in all of our interests to be fair with pricing as we want you to enjoy the Silo experience and order more containers.
