Using Alexa with Your Silo

5 min read read

The Silo system includes built-in Alexa integration, making container labeling as simple as answering a question when vacuum sealing food.

But Alexa can do much more. From setting timers to checking the freshness of your food, Alexa becomes a helpful assistant in your kitchen.

General Alexa Use in the Kitchen

When connected to your Silo device, Alexa works like any Alexa-enabled device and can assist with a variety of kitchen tasks.

  • Setting Timers — Ask Alexa to set cooking timers or reminders, for example: 'Alexa, set a timer for 20 minutes.'
  • Unit Conversions — Quickly convert measurements while cooking, for example: 'Alexa, how many tablespoons are in ¼ cup?'
  • Recipe Suggestions — Ask Alexa for recipe ideas such as: 'Alexa, give me a recipe with chicken and potatoes.'
  • Cooking Information — Ask cooking questions like: 'Alexa, how do I roast vegetables?' or 'Alexa, what temperature should I bake chicken at?'

By combining Alexa voice commands with Silo’s kitchen features, you get a powerful cooking assistant right on your countertop.

Checking Food Freshness with Alexa

Because Silo and Alexa are fully integrated, you can use voice commands to check the freshness of your stored food.

Instead of opening the app manually, simply ask Alexa about the status of your vacuum-sealed foods.

  • Alexa, is my chicken still okay?
  • Alexa, how many days until the carrots go bad?
  • Alexa, when does my ground coffee expire?

You can check food freshness from any Alexa device connected to your Amazon account, not just the Alexa built into your Silo.

Alexa Device Control

Alexa can also control your Silo device directly using standard voice commands.

  • Volume Control — 'Alexa, turn up the volume' or 'Alexa, set volume to 5.'
  • Do Not Disturb Mode — 'Alexa, turn on Do Not Disturb.'
  • Stop Listening — 'Alexa, stop listening' to disable voice detection temporarily.

Alexa Light Ring Indications

The light ring on the Silo base also acts as a visual indicator for Alexa notifications and status updates.

  • Yellow — A slow yellow burst indicates a new Alexa notification or reminder.
  • Red — A solid red ring means the microphone is turned off.
  • Purple — Indicates Do Not Disturb mode or a Wi-Fi setup issue.
For a complete list of Alexa light ring colors and their meanings, refer to Amazon’s official Alexa support documentation.

Accessing Additional Alexa Features

For advanced Alexa functionality, open the Alexa mobile app where you can explore additional skills, manage linked accounts, and configure routines.

This allows you to fully integrate your Silo device into your smart home and kitchen workflow.
