Labeling Silo Containers

4 min read read

Keeping track of your food's freshness is easy with Silo's smart labeling system. The primary method for labeling is directly through your Silo device, with the mobile app serving as a tool for corrections or missing information.

Labeling Your Containers

Your connected Silo device makes labeling each container simple using the hands-free labeling feature.

Place New Food in a Container

Whenever you store a new food item in a Silo container, the device will recognize it's time to label it.

  • This occurs when a container was previously cleared from inventory
  • Or when Silo detects new contents in the container

Complete the Vacuum Process

After placing the container on the Silo base and completing the vacuum process, the device will begin checking the contents.

Look at the Silo screen for the instruction: 'Pick up to label'.

Pick Up the Container

Once you see the 'Pick up to label' message, lift the container. Alexa will begin the labeling process.

Respond to Alexa's Labeling Prompt

Simply speak the contents of the container when Alexa asks.

Use specific labels such as 'cooked chicken breast' instead of simply 'chicken' to improve shelf-life predictions.

Alexa May Ask for Extra Details

Alexa may ask additional questions to better understand the food and estimate freshness more accurately.

Confirmation and Correction

Once Alexa confirms the label, she will provide an expected shelf life and the item will appear in your Silo app inventory.

If Alexa misheard the label, press the label button on the Silo device while it is illuminated. Alexa will ask for the correct label.

The label button remains illuminated briefly after labeling so you can correct mistakes.

What Happens if Your Device Is Offline?

If Silo loses its internet connection during the vacuum-label process, the device will attempt to update the vacuum event when the connection is restored.

If the update cannot be completed automatically, a message will appear after the vacuum process indicating that labeling failed.

  • Use the mobile app to label the container manually
  • Or reseal the container and try labeling again later

In-App Labeling

If a label was not created on the device or you want to update it manually, you can edit the label directly from the Silo mobile app.

Access Your Inventory

Open the Silo app and navigate to the 'My Silos' screen to view your container inventory.

Edit the Label

  • Tap on the container card
  • Tap the label button in the top right

Confirm the New Label

  • Type the new label
  • Press 'Confirm' to save

The app will validate the label and update the estimated shelf life automatically.
